Committees

Administration: oversees the operation of the Temple office and provides leadership to the office manager and staff. The services provided by the office make for the smooth operation of the Temple and its constituent Arms.

Adult Education: promotes and organizes educational activities which enable members of the congregation to expand their knowledge of Jewish tradition and practices. Additionally, the committee organizes adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation classes and adult education study programs.

Art: plans and arranges a series of art exhibits and supervises and participates in the design and mounting of shows, publicity and hospitality. An opening reception for each exhibit follows services as part of the Oneg Shabbat. There are currently about six exhibits per year.

Budget & Finance: prepares the annual Temple budget based upon expenditures, committee budget requests and anticipated income and presents it to the Board of Trustees. The committee also is responsible for assessing and making recommendations to the Treasurer and Board of Trustees on matters related to fiscal integrity of the congregation. Additional tasks may be assigned by the President, Treasurer and/or at the direction of the Board of Trustees.

Cemetery: manages the Cemetery, located on Watt Street, under the authorization of the Board of Trustees. Responsibilities include management of Perpetual Care Fund, contracting for required maintenance and improvements of the Cemetery grounds, setting of rules and regulations pertaining to cemetery property, and budget preparation.

Endowment: is charged with the responsibility of administration of all endowed contributions. This committee meets on a regular basis and oversees the investment activity while working to build on the equity and contributions. Temple members are encouraged to assist in any way possible including suggestions, donations and long range planning.

Historical and Archives: obtains and disseminates information on the past history of the Temple and community. The committee also develops procedures to assure that current material is properly preserved for future generations. Members are encouraged to pursue particular sources of historical information.

House: assumes responsibility for the management of the Temple properties, buildings and grounds, including repairs and improvements. The committee also recommends to the Board expenditures for capital projects. Fees for the use of the synagogue building and equipment are set by this committee.

Long-Range Planning: determines the present and future needs of the Temple and what should be done to improve our service to members of the congregation.

Membership: invites prospective members to affiliate with the Temple. Committee members answer questions about the congregation and meet with prospective members at the Temple. An open house is held periodically throughout the year hosted by the committee. Additionally, the committee organizes a new member dinner to further acquaint new members with various Temple activities and to welcome them into the Temple family.

Nominating: consists of a chairperson from the Board of Directors, three members from the Board, three members from the congregation at large and one alternate. This committee is charged with bringing to the candidates for leadership through a position on the Board. Other duties are to offer a slate of officer candidates each year and monitor membership tenure as described in the constitution. Suggestions for candidacy to the Board are welcome.

Outreach: aids in the integration of "Jews by Choice" into the Temple community and to help the adjustments of non-Jewish spouses by creating a greater awareness of the sensitivities on both sides. Panel discussions and informal meetings are held throughout the year.

Religious School: is composed of Temple members and religious, school staff. In monthly meetings they consider school policies, activities and budgets. The committee works closely with the Educator for all holiday preparations for the Religious School.

Reyut (Friendship): is sponsored by the Temple Sisterhood. Reyut is a program of mutual reaching out, member-to-member to meet the human needs of the congregational family. For the times of stress and difficulty in everyone's life when a helping hand can be of comfort, Reyut has an active committee of volunteers available to respond to emergency calls, assist with everyday needs and visit the sick or lonely and provide transportation to Sabbath Services or other Temple functions.

Ritual: supervises the conduct of Sabbath and High Holy Day Services. This includes appointing ushers for Services, distributing High Holy Day honors, and reviewing ritual policies of the Temple with the Rabbi. The committee is also responsible for the musical contribution to the Services.

Social Action: studies, evaluates and recommends to the Board of trustees appropriate action on matters of social significance, guided by the moral and ethical principles of Reform Judaism. The committee keeps informed on community relations and seeks congregational support for various social action campaigns.

TCSC - Temple Community Service Corps: is a major project of the Social Action committee started in 1971. It raises funds to pay stipends for young people to do volunteer work in the community in various community agencies such as Volunteer Bureau, Schenectady Day Nursery, Bethesda House, Girls Inc., Hamilton Hill Arts Center, SICM food pantry, and  Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home. This local "Peace Corps" project has provided an exciting opportunity for young people to explore new areas of challenge, gain invaluable experience working in the community and receive personal as well as financial reward.

Ways and Means: plans fund-raising activities to help supplement the Temple funds. The committee conducts an annual Jewish Food Festival, a biannual Comedy Night, and a biannual Gala honoring the recipient of the Rabbi Michael M. Szenes Humanitarian Award.

Youth: oversees the youth affairs and the needs of youth in the Temple community. The committee provides guidance for the youth advisers; administers Youth Program funds, which defray advisor expenses, and scholarship funds to youth group members for summer regional and national activities; and provides a liaison between youth advisor/youth groups and the general membership.
