Stefano Sings Again
We are excited to announce that on Saturday, November 10th, 7:00 pm, Temple Gates will once again be hosting a fundraising concert and dessert social featuring our own Student Cantor Stefano Iacono. The evening event will feature two concerts in one: a set of Stefano’s heartfelt interpretations of songs from the recent and classic popular songbooks and a set celebrating seventy years of Israel as a cultural tapestry.
Stefano will accompany himself on guitar and on piano; but not at the same time. A social hour featuring an array of delicious desserts prepared by talented congregants will enhance what is sure to be a wonderful and memorable evening.
Last February, Stefano gave a tremendously successful concert featuring music from contemporary artists like Jason Mraz, Brandi Carlisle, The Cranberries and Lana Del Rey as well as classic hits from Fleetwood Mac, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, and Leonard Cohen. That evening performance is still available as a two-CD recording from the temple. The upcoming concert will feature another full set of diverse popular tunes from recent and classic artists.
This time around, however, Stefano will also present a full set of music from the land of Israel. The traditions found within Israeli music represent the diversity of Jewish lives, and on this 70th anniversary of the founding of the State, he will celebrate its lesser-heard voices: the voices of women, LGBTQ Israelis, and Arab/Mizrahi Jews of color. This concert will bring to light some of this music (as well as some of the most-loved classic sounds) of our collective experience as Jews connected to the land of Israel.
From 2008 until 2014, Stefano Iacono traveled all over Texas with his guitar and electric piano playing in bars and listening rooms, sharing the stories of his original works and his compelling interpretations of popular songs. He then returned to school to finish his undergraduate studies and moved on to become a cantorial student at Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. After spending a year in Israel, he established residency in New York and became Gates of Heaven’s student cantor in 2017. He is now in his second full year of bringing his voice, his creativity, and his spirituality to the congregation.
We can look forward to a delightful evening that will take us on an eclectic musical journey that is homey and intimate and above all, a treat for the ears and soul.
